In the crypto world, both assets and technologies are gradually taking center stage with greater practical significance.

In the past few months, from Jamaica, where Hurricane Melissa caused a nationwide internet outage, to Uganda, where the authorities cut off signal due to the election, an encrypted communication app called Bitchat has unexpectedly become popular, becoming a "communication Noah's Ark" in the eyes of millions of people around the world.

Having topped the download charts multiple times, Bitchat has become a "communication Noah's Ark".

In extreme environments such as internet censorship, natural disasters, or infrastructure failures, traditional instant messaging tools often fail collectively. Bitchat has proven itself in numerous real-world scenarios to be more than just a social networking app; it is a crucial emergency tool for dealing with internet outages, helping countless people overcome digital barriers and reconnect to the world.

Recently, on the eve of the presidential election, the Ugandan government cut off the national internet, citing the need to curb disinformation. Faced with the internet shutdown, Bitchat quickly became the country's most downloaded application. Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the platform, maintaining basic information flow amidst the information blockade.

Besides its role in handling sudden social unrest, Bitchat is also a crucial tool during natural disasters. In October 2025, Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica, causing devastating damage to the island's power and communication networks, with network connectivity plummeting to around 30% of normal levels. During this darkest hour when traditional instant messaging tools were completely paralyzed, Bitchat quickly filled the gap, topping the local app charts and becoming a vital communication channel for the country's 2.8 million residents.

According to AppFigures data, Bitchat not only topped the Jamaican App Store's social networking app charts but also ranked second on the overall free app charts for both iOS and Android platforms. This marked the first time Bitchat experienced a massive download surge triggered by a natural disaster.

This surge in popularity during crises is not an isolated case. In Nepal, Indonesia, Madagascar, and Côte d'Ivoire, whether due to government intervention stemming from political protests or infrastructure damage caused by disasters, Bitchat has seen a rise in popularity during periods of internet restrictions, becoming a haven for people to maintain basic communication during turbulent times.

From a "weekend experiment" to a "powerful tool for encrypted communication," it has garnered millions of downloads.

Bitchat's rise to popularity is no accident. As an encrypted communication application that runs on Bluetooth mesh networking and does not require the internet, Bitchat precisely addresses the pain points of traditional instant messaging tools in extreme environments.

This decentralized peer-to-peer chat application was launched in the summer of 2025 by Jack Dorsey, co-founder of X (formerly Twitter), with the aim of exploring Bluetooth mesh networks, message encryption, and store-and-forward models. At the time, he wrote on the X platform, "I worked on a project over the weekend to learn about Bluetooth mesh networks, relay and store-and-forward modes, message encryption models, and some other things."

Today, this open-source "weekend experiment project" has evolved into a powerful decentralized offline communication tool with real-world significance.

Imagine being able to securely and encrypted communicate with people nearby using only a mobile phone during a natural disaster or in a remote mountainous area, without needing an account or personal information.

Specifically, Bitchat's core competitiveness lies in its innovative application of Bluetooth Mesh (BLE Mesh) technology. Unlike traditional point-to-point Bluetooth connections, Bitchat transforms each smartphone with the app installed into a dynamic node with routing capabilities. This mode supports multi-hop relay, meaning that information is not limited to transmission between two nearby devices but can be relayed through countless intermediate nodes, thus greatly extending signal coverage. Even if some nodes go offline due to movement or shutdown, the system will automatically calculate the optimal path for rerouting. It remains online even when the world experiences network outages or base station collapses due to extreme conditions.

Unlike tools like WeChat and WhatsApp that rely on centralized servers, Bitchat prioritizes ultimate privacy. Users don't need to link their phone numbers, email addresses, or social media accounts; it's ready to use immediately. All messages are end-to-end encrypted, ensuring content is only visible to the sender and receiver, and the sender's ID and timestamp are obfuscated. Because there's no central server, user communications, friend lists, and physical activity leave no trace in the cloud, fundamentally eliminating the possibility of data leaks and large-scale surveillance.

Beyond basic communication, Bitchat introduces a practical location note feature. Users can pin information to specific geographic coordinates. In disaster relief or emergency scenarios, these notes can mark danger zone warnings, safe shelter guides, or even community mutual aid information; any user entering the geofence will receive an immediate alert.

This highly resilient communication feature has driven explosive growth in Bitchat's user adoption, with downloads exceeding one million, especially popular in regions with restricted or disrupted internet access. For example, during Iran's internet blockade in 2025, weekly downloads reached 438,000; during Nepal's anti-corruption protests in September 2025, downloads surged to over 48,000; and ahead of Uganda's 2026 general election, thanks to a recommendation from an opposition leader, over 21,000 people installed it within just 10 hours.

It can be said that Bitchat's rapid development is not only due to Jack Dorsey's personal influence or its free model, but also to its provision of permissionless connectivity to users worldwide. When the rest of the world goes offline, Bitchat remains online.

Ethereum Fusaka Upgrade Set for December 3 Mainnet Launch, Blob Capacity to Double

Ethereum developers confirmed the Fusaka upgrade will activate on mainnet on December 3, 2025, following a systematic testnet rollout beginning on October 1 on Holesky. The major hard fork will implement around 11-12 Ethereum Improvement Proposals targeting scalability, node efficiency, and data availability improvements without adding new user-facing features. According to Christine Kim, the upgrade introduces a phased blob capacity expansion through Blob Parameter Only forks occurring two weeks after Fusaka activation. Initially maintaining current blob limits of 6/9 target/max, the first BPO fork will increase capacity to 10/15 blobs one week later. A second BPO fork will further expand limits to 14/21 blobs, more than doubling total capacity within two weeks. Strategic Infrastructure Overhaul Fusaka prioritizes backend protocol improvements over user-facing features, focusing on making Ethereum faster and less resource-intensive. The upgrade includes PeerDAS implementation through EIP-7594, allowing validator nodes to verify data by sampling small pieces rather than downloading entire blobs. This reduces bandwidth and storage requirements while enhancing Layer 2 rollup scalability. The upgrade builds on recent gas limit increases from 30 million to 45 million gas, with ongoing discussions for further expansion. EIP-7935 proposes increasing limits to 150 million gas, potentially enabling significantly higher transaction throughput. These improvements complement broader scalability efforts, including EIP-9698, which suggests a 100x gas limit increase over two years to reach 2,000 transactions per second. Fusaka removes the previously planned EVM Object Format redesign to reduce complexity while maintaining focus on essential infrastructure improvements. The upgrade introduces bounded base fees for blob transactions via EIP-7918, creating more predictable transaction costs for data-heavy applications. Enhanced spam resistance and security improvements strengthen network resilience against scalability bottlenecks and attacks. Technical Implementation and Testing Timeline The Fusaka rollout follows a conservative four-phase approach across Ethereum testnets before mainnet deployment. Holesky upgrade occurs October 1, followed by Sepolia on October 14 and Hoodi on October 28. Each testnet will undergo the complete BPO fork sequence to validate the blob capacity expansion mechanism. BPO forks activate automatically based on predetermined epochs rather than requiring separate hard fork processes. On mainnet, the first BPO fork launches December 17, increasing blob capacity to 10/15 target/max. The second BPO fork activates January 7, 2026, reaching the final capacity of 14/21 blobs. This automated approach enables flexible blob scaling without requiring full network upgrades. Notably, node operators face release deadlines ranging from September 25 for Holesky to November 3 for mainnet preparation. The staggered timeline, according to the developers, allows comprehensive testing while giving infrastructure providers sufficient preparation time. Speculatively, the developers use this backward-compatible approach to ensure smooth transitions with minimal disruption to existing applications. PeerDAS implementation reduces node resource demands, potentially increasing network decentralization by lowering barriers for smaller operators. The technology enables more efficient data availability sampling, crucial for supporting growing Layer 2 rollup adoption. Overall, these improvements, combined with increased gas limits, will enable Ethereum to handle higher transaction volumes while maintaining security guarantees. Addressing Network Scalability Pressures The Fusaka upgrade addresses mounting pressure for Ethereum base layer improvements amid criticism of Layer 2 fragmentation strategies. Critics argue that reliance on rollups has created isolated chains with limited interoperability, complicating user experiences. The upgrade’s focus on infrastructure improvements aims to enhance base layer capacity while supporting continued Layer 2 growth. The recent validator queue controversy particularly highlights ongoing network scalability challenges. According to a Cryptonews report covered yesterday, currently, over 2M ETH sits in exit queues facing 43-day delays, while entry queues process in just 7 days.Ethereum Validator Queue (Source: ValidatorQueue) However, Vitalik Buterin defended these delays as essential for network security, comparing validator commitments to military service requiring “friction in quitting.” The upgrade coincides with growing institutional interest in Ethereum infrastructure, with VanEck predicting that Layer 2 networks could reach $1 trillion market capitalization within six years. Fusaka’s emphasis on data availability and node efficiency supports Ethereum’s evolution toward seamless cross-chain interoperability. The upgrade complements initiatives like the Open Intents Framework, where Coinbase Payments recently joined as a core contributor. The initiative, if successful, will address the $21B surge in cross-chain crime. These coordinated efforts aim to unify the fragmented multichain experience while maintaining Ethereum’s security and decentralization principles
