Trust Wallet Hack: What Happened?

A major security incident involving Trust Wallet was confirmed on December 26, 2025, after a supply-chain attack compromised its Chrome browser extension.

The attack targeted version 2.68 of the extension, where malicious code was injected into an official update, allowing attackers to steal user seed phrases and drain wallets.

Importantly, mobile-only Trust Wallet users were not affected.

Scope of the Losses

  • Total funds stolen: approximately $7 million
  • Chains affected: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana
  • Victims: hundreds of users
  • Individual losses: ranged from ~$50,000 up to $3.5 million per wallet
  • On-chain confirmation: Funds were tracked moving to exchanges by investigators such as ZachXBT and Lookonchain

The exploit reportedly occurred on Christmas Day (Dec 25), before being publicly disclosed.

Binance & CZ Respond

Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance, which owns Trust Wallet, publicly confirmed that:

All affected users will be fully reimbursed.

He also reassured users that funds and core systems remain safe, emphasizing that the issue was isolated to the compromised browser extension version.

Immediate Actions for Users

Trust Wallet has already released version 2.69, which removes the malicious code. Users are strongly advised to:

  • Immediately disable and remove extension version 2.68
  • Update to version 2.69 only
  • Transfer assets to a brand-new wallet
  • Assume seed phrases are compromised

Bigger Picture: Supply-Chain Risk Returns

This incident is another reminder that browser extensions remain a high-risk attack vector, even when updates come from official sources.

Security experts continue to stress:

  • Use hardware wallets for large holdings
  • Avoid keeping long-term funds in hot wallets
  • Verify updates and announcements via official channels only

UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach

The post UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. British crypto holders may soon face a very different landscape as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) moves to expand its regulatory reach in the industry. A new consultation paper outlines how the watchdog intends to apply its rulebook to crypto firms, shaping everything from asset safeguarding to trading platform operation. According to the financial regulator, these proposals would translate into clearer protections for retail investors and stricter oversight of crypto firms. UK FCA plans Until now, UK crypto users mostly encountered the FCA through rules on promotions and anti-money laundering checks. The consultation paper goes much further. It proposes direct oversight of stablecoin issuers, custodians, and crypto-asset trading platforms (CATPs). For investors, that means the wallets, exchanges, and coins they rely on could soon be subject to the same governance and resilience standards as traditional financial institutions. The regulator has also clarified that firms need official authorization before serving customers. This condition should, in theory, reduce the risk of sudden platform failures or unclear accountability. David Geale, the FCA’s executive director of payments and digital finance, said the proposals are designed to strike a balance between innovation and protection. He explained: “We want to develop a sustainable and competitive crypto sector – balancing innovation, market integrity and trust.” Geale noted that while the rules will not eliminate investment risks, they will create consistent standards, helping consumers understand what to expect from registered firms. Why does this matter for crypto holders? The UK regulatory framework shift would provide safer custody of assets, better disclosure of risks, and clearer recourse if something goes wrong. However, the regulator was also frank in its submission, arguing that no rulebook can eliminate the volatility or inherent risks of holding digital assets. Instead, the focus is on ensuring that when consumers choose to invest, they do…
