About 70 million Americans struggle with sleep. That’s roughly one in five people lying awake at night, minds racing, unable to shut off. And while the wellness industry has given us trackers like Whoop and Oura that tell you how badly you slept, very few products actually help you fall asleep in the first place.
That’s the gap ZZZ AI is trying to fill.
The app, built by What If Projects, Inc., uses AI to generate personalized bedtime stories and pairs them with guided breathing exercises. The idea is simple: instead of tracking your sleep after the fact, help you actually get there.
“Everyone’s building sleep trackers,” said Ansh Chopra, co-founder of What If Projects. “But knowing you got 4 hours of deep sleep doesn’t help you fall asleep tomorrow. We wanted to build something that actually solves the problem, not just measures it.”
The app works like this: open it before bed, pick a story theme, enchanted forests, space voyages, rainy nights. The AI generates a unique narration on the spot. No two stories are the same. Users can also run through a 4-7-8 breathing exercise, a technique backed by sleep researchers to slow heart rate and calm the nervous system.
The team’s goal is ambitious: help 100 million Americans sleep better.
“Sleep is this massive problem hiding in plain sight,” said Patrick Trudel, co-founder. “People spend hundreds on mattresses and supplements, but the real issue is they can’t turn their brain off. That’s what AI is actually good at — creating calm, personalized experiences that help you disconnect.”
What If Projects isn’t new to consumer AI. The team previously built Monk AI, Nova AI, and Finwise — apps that have collectively reached millions of users. With ZZZ AI, they’re betting that the sleep space is ripe for an AI-native solution.
The app is free and available now on iOS. It features a dark mode interface designed specifically for nighttime use — no blinding white screens at 11pm.
In a market flooded with apps that tell you what’s wrong, ZZZ AI is making a bet that people would rather have something that helps them fix it. You can download it here.
