Young Republicans were more proud to be American under Obama than under Trump: data analyst

CNN data analyst Harry Enten sorts through revealing polls and surveys of American attitudes, looking for shifts, and his latest finding is an indictment of President Donald Trump from members of his own party.

Speaking with Kate Bolduan on Tuesday, Enten explored patriotism among young Americans. His report comes after Olympians spoke out about their displeasure with how the U.S. government treats immigrants.

Using Gallup Poll data, Enten said that in 2015, 71 percent of people under 35 were "extremely proud or very proud" to be American. That number today is at 36 percent.

While Enten said that young Republican numbers hadn't changed much, the reality is that Republican voters under 35 were prouder to be American under President Barack Obama than under Trump.

In 2013, the number of surveyors who said they were "extremely proud or very proud" to be American was 92 percent. Today, that number is at 80 percent, a 12-point drop under their most recent Republican president.

"So, what we're seeing is we're seeing younger people and Democrats really shifting away, shifting downward in their proudness to be an American," Enten closed.

"But Democrats are very much shifting away as the partisanship of the president, saying Donald Trump has really sort of changed the equation for young Americans and Democratic Americans, or those who identify as Democrats," he added.
