Colorado Rural Health Center CEO Michelle Mills was honored with three national awards during the National Rural Health Association’s Rural Health Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. The awards recognized her service as 2025 NRHA Board President, her contributions to rural health leadership through the National Rural Health Foundation, and her overall exemplary leadership in the field.

NRHA CEO Alan Morgan stated that Mills’ impact on the organization and its progress over the past year ‘cannot be understated’ and that the foundation was grateful for her leadership during her time on the board. The National Rural Health Association brings together thousands of members across the United States to provide leadership on rural health issues through advocacy, communications, education, and research.

‘It was an honor to serve NRHA as Board President in 2025 and I am humbled to receive recognition from NRHA, an exemplary leader in the field,’ Mills said. ‘Rural Healthcare is undergoing huge changes right now and the leadership of NRHA, and its partnership with CRHC and countless others nationally, is making sure that the voices of rural Americans are heard.’

The recognition comes at a critical time for rural healthcare, which faces unique challenges including provider shortages, limited access to specialty care, and financial sustainability issues. The awards highlight the importance of coordinated advocacy efforts between state and national organizations to address these systemic challenges.

During the policy institute, Mills led the Colorado delegation in five meetings with federal legislators, including Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper and Representatives Lauren Boebert, Brittany Pettersen, and Yadira Caraveo. These meetings focused on the future of rural healthcare and ensuring that policy decisions consider the specific needs of rural communities.

The Colorado delegation included representatives from various rural healthcare organizations across the state, demonstrating the collaborative approach needed to address complex healthcare challenges. The Colorado Rural Health Center, established in 1991 as Colorado’s State Office of Rural Health, serves dual roles as both the State Office of Rural Health and the State Rural Health Association, working to enhance healthcare services in rural communities.

This recognition matters because it underscores the critical role of leadership in bridging the gap between rural healthcare providers and national policy makers. As rural healthcare systems face unprecedented challenges, effective advocacy and coordinated efforts between state and national organizations become increasingly important for ensuring equitable access to quality care for rural residents. The awards highlight how individual leadership can amplify the voices of rural communities in national conversations about healthcare policy and resource allocation.
