The Long Walk, a dystopian horror thriller based on a novel by Stephen King, is coming to digital streaming this week.
The Long Walk was first released as a novel under King’s author pseudonym, Richard Bachman, in 1979. The Hunger Games franchise filmmaker Francis Lawrence is the director of the feature film adaption of The Long Walk, which is written by Strange Darling filmmaker JT Mollner.
The Long Walk was released in theaters on Sept. 12. In the film, 100 teen boys annually participate in a brutal endurance competition called “The Long Walk.” During the competition, each of the teens must maintain a certain walking speed or get shot to death on site. The winner, however, earns a large cash prize.
The Long Walk stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer and Mark Hamill.
Lionsgate recently announced that The Long Walk will be coming to digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Oct. 21, on such platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube.
The film will be available to purchase on PVOD for $24.99 and since digital rentals are generally $5 less than purchase prices, it should be available to rent for $19.99 for 48 hours.
‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Star Is Proud To A Part Of ‘The Long Walk’s’ Ensemble
Among the stars of The Long Walk is Ben Wang, who stars as Li Fong opposite Ralph Macchio, Jackie Chan and Ming-Na Wen in the new Karate Kid film Karate Kid: Legends.
In The Long Walk, Wang stars as Hank Olson #46, one of the teen walkers in the grueling competition. Coincidentally, Wang said being a part of the ensemble cast made him think of the cast of another movie based on a classic Stephen King story.
“The Long Walk is an ensemble movie, and the young cast in that film they’ve put together, it was really a privilege to be in it with them and work with them,” Wang said during a Zoom conversation in July. “I feel like this film follows in the tradition of movies like Stand by Me — those kinds of films where it introduced a young acting ensemble and everybody is so incredibly talented.”
The Long Walk, which is still playing in theaters, has made $34.4 million domestically and nearly $12.9 million internationally for a worldwide box office gross of $47.3 million to date.
The film had a production budget of $20 million before prints and advertising costs, The Numbers reported.
In addition, The Long Walk earned an 88% “fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 273 reviews and an 85% “fresh” score on RT’s Popcornmeter.
Rated R, The Long Walk arrives on PVOD on Tuesday.
